Contemporary dance versus Eastern martial arts? The contrast between the two dissolves and they fade into each other during the three short pieces of the performance. Power, dynamics, rhythm, aikido-partnering.

 

The joint production of Central Europe Dance Theater and the Gangaray Dance Company consist of three brief choreographies in which three works of different styles, moods and musicality are all seamlessly blended into one. Kinga Maday and József Hámor’s Arterror presents the meeting and coalescing of two human beings, who become attuned to each other through „Aikido-partnership”. Catatonia, a thick mass, prayer… Miss Maday’s Ocean’s Five shows the reality of five men in one world, into which we are granted a glimpse through the personality of one of them.  The evening’s closed by Mr. Hámor’s Ocean’s Six+1, focusing on the dominance between men and women in a community. Oriental martial arts, contemporary dance with folklore roots, Aikido: unity, harmony-disharmony, explosiveness, individual qualities, female and male dominance.

Compagnie Pal Frenak: Hymen

 

The God known as Hymenaios in ancient Greece and Hymen in ancient Rome was referred to as the son of either Apollo or Dionysus. Regardless of his disputed ancestry, he was deeply revered and his name referred to feasts, matings and the sings sung in his praise. 

 

In Pál Frenák’s latest piece entitled Hymen, we are also invited to join a wedding. Over the course of this evening we can drift between the here and now and a far away place, while witnessing something deeply personal and yet disturbingly common. On this evening we can sense a drifting, irresistible force pushing us onwards, allowing us to discover – both as a witness and a participant – the painful pattern of eternal and yet still finite pattern of human games within the internal relations of a family. Representation, fight of strong egos, frustration and desire, gender-questions, confidence and lack of confidence – these are the components of a Pal Frenak-kind of wedding ceremony.

Pál Frenák was born in Budapest in 1957. His childhood is marked by the fact that his parents were severely hearing and speech impaired, making sign language his first means of expression. This rendered him especially receptive towards mimicry and gestures and all other ways of expressing content with the help of the human body.

In the quest for his vocation, he left Hungary for Paris in the middle of the 1980′s. He soon started working with many well-known artists from the world of classical ballet and studied the Cunningham and Limon dance techniques. Thanks to his French wife’s social network, architect Catherine Frenák, he gained entry into the world of contemporary artists whose influence helped him master the use of uncommon shapes and spaces. His later work is deeply influenced by the movies of Italian director Pier Paolo Pasolini, the ideas of Francis Bacon and Gilles Deleuse, as well as his personal relationship with the contemporary French painter, Jean-Olivier.

In 1999, he transformed the ten-year-old Compagnie Pal Frenak into a Hungarian-French international cooperation by hiring young Hungarian dancers. The ensemble, now performing both in Paris and in Budapest, is widely known for its unique style of dance that integrates mimicry, sign language and body language, combined with carefully chosen elements of circus, theater, fashion shows and contemporary music.

Not only does Pál Frenák have a wide repertoire as a choreographer, he also has a busy schedule as an instructor. He regularly organizes professional workshops, gives free initiation shows to high-school students and he frequently meets his public, always putting great emphasis on the dialog with other art forms and the continuous, adequate cooperation with the public. He works together with some of the most renowned people in contemporary European music such as György Kurtág, Patrick Schneider, Francois Donato, Fred Bigot and Fabrice Planquette.
