1st Part | Hungarian State Folk Ensemble: Transcarpathia Invoked
Photo (on the left): Dusa Gábor
The new choreography of the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble, Transcarpathia Invoked, for the first time in the history of the Hungarian folkdance shows the colourful and rich traditional culture of the nations living in Eastern-Carpathia and in its foreground Transcarpathia: Hungarians, Ukrainians, Rusyns, Romanians, Gipsies, Jews. It presents all that is common in these nations’ folklore as well as all the national characteristics, the emphasis however, is on the common roots, picturing the necessary similarities resulting from the shared historical past.

2nd Part | Duna Art Ensemble: Blacklake
Our performance evokes a village in Transsylvania called Blacklake (Negreni), where one of the biggest fair in Central-Europe has been held for centuries. The originally traditional market has changed over the years, the supplies satisfying the needs of the rural communities have disappeared, the fair became a tourist attraction, a mere flea-market, where the past can be bought as cheap junk and the future is sold half-price…
Whether the Blacklake is a clear spring which reflects our soul and essence or an oil-polluted water surface? Whether the consumption of rootless – commercialized and fashion-orientated – culture doesn’t rot our roots? The Blacklake is a grotesk tableau of the cultural chaos resulted from anomalies of the consumer society.
As in the whirl of the fair different Transylvanian folks have been present, the choreograpies of the ironic and humorous performance are also built on Romanian, Hungarian and Roma dances.
Performed by the dancers of Duna Art Ensemble and the Göncöl Band
