Vienna during the reign of Joseph II. Mozart lives and works here. The majority of the court is petty and stupid criticising and rejecting Mozart. It is only the influential court composer, elderly Antonio Salieri who understands the significance of the young genius. However the more Saileri is enchanted by Mozart's music the more jelous and despicable he becomes. His only aim is to destroy the young genius.
Shaffer's play is not authentic, nevertheless it creates an atmosphere that excitingly presents the age, the characters and the music of the era in which Mozart comes to life.
Excerpts of Mozart's most beautiful compositions are played live by the 30 members of the Pécs Symphonietta, sung by the Choir of the Pécs National Theatre.
The performance is played in Hungarian.
