Géza Oberfrank's translation re-written by Attila Galambos
Don Giovanni is "the opera of operas", the most widely known piece of stage music. It is almost religious how audiences worship Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's composition.
The opera recalls the legendary character of the lecherous Don Juan. Da Ponte's libretto was regarded as a 'dramma giocoso' i.e. playful drama, which means that comic and dramatic elements are mixed in it. The story, the series of events, the wide variety of extreme emotions come with such a high quality music that could not yet be outdone. Sensual, unforgettable tunes even for the first hearing, brilliant unity of shocking tension and dramatic power - this is why Don Giovanni enchants all ages, every kind of people. No one can deny its power, we are all seduced by it forever.
